As we only represent Corrections staff working inside the wire, we have made the most difference to wage increases, working conditions and personal safety than any other union.
Salary increases
Under the Labour Government of 1998 to 2008, starting salaries increased by 36.5% from $31,500 to $42,982. Private prisons were also returned to the public sector. We stopped the loss of conditions.
Under the National Government of 2008 to 2018, starting salaries increased by 23.16% from $42,982 to $52,940.
Personal safety and better working conditions
CANZ fought for and achieved the following on behalf of our members:
- Stab resistant body armour for corrections officers
- On-body cameras for all staff working inside the wire
- Pepper spray for all staff
- SERT or dedicated response teams to assist officers in a crisis
- The return of private prison to the public sector
- Variable working shifts (8, 10 and 12 hours)
- We have never conceded any conditions
